Space Marine Victory!

Posted on 06:04 by rajrani
It's unclear at this point whether it was Games Workshop or Amazon that blinked, but someone responded to the enormous pressure and media attention that the recent Space Marine trademark issue brought. Spots the Space Marine is now back up and available in Kindle format on Amazon.com.

Congratulations to M.C.A. Hogarth and thanks to all of the hundreds (if not thousands) of people who stood up against trademark bullying on this issue.

Now to get to work on my next project, Space Marines of Greyhawk.

EDIT: Thanks are due to the EFF. Thanks, guys!

More Games Workshop Legal Shenanigans

Posted on 07:44 by rajrani
Remember last year when the news broke that Games Workshop was attempting to assert a trademark over the term "Space Marines", and had some ebook on Amazon taken down because it used the phrase in the title?

Well, there's a bit of follow-up on the case, both from the author of said ebook, M.C.A. Hogarth (In the Future, All Space Marines Will Be Warhammer 40K Space Marines), as well as John Scalzi's blog, and Cory Doctorow over at BoingBoing, which certainly raise the story's profile. The trouble is, the author doesn't have the funds to fight the legal battle, so unless something changes GW will win by default. That doesn't mean that they'll actually have the trademark on "Space Marines", but it does mean their case will be a little bit stronger, because their claim is starting to be recognized and not challenged.

I'd certainly support a "Save Spots the Space Marine" campaign, just on principle.

UPDATES (ongoing):

Now Popehat has put out a call for folks to write GW concerning the issue. I doubt that will generate many emails sympathetic to GW's position...
...and a mention on io9.com...
...and I'm sure Games Workshop would love to hear from you on this subject on Twitter. #BoycottGW
...and now it's been SlashDotted...
...and Wil Wheaton has sent his flying monkeys as well...
...and now The Most Interesting Man in the World has chimed in...

...and The Escapist...
...and ICv2...
...and The Guardian...
...and Kotaku...
...and Corante...
...and Game Dynamo...
...and The Mary Sue...
...and a whoooole lot of other places, too.

If you want to buy the book in paperback, because Amazon is being a spineless weasel and has taken down the Kindle edition, you can do so --> HERE <--

UPDATE: Space Marine Victory!

Great Interview with Frank Mentzer

Posted on 05:48 by rajrani
Random Wizard has an interview up today with TSR legend Frank Mentzer. They cover Frank's time at TSR (including a brief snippet about a topic near and dear to my own heart, what 2nd edition would have looked like if Gary had stayed with TSR), New Infinities and his new venture Eldritch Enterprises. Highly recommended.

James Raggi vs. Kickstarter, Part Deux

Posted on 18:31 by rajrani
James Raggi of LotFP fame wants to make a big splash for the next Free RPG Day, and he's turned to Kickstarter to make it happen. The idea is to have a 64 page adventure, complete with art and all the trimmings, made available for free. Wowzers!

Now, here's where it gets interesting.

If he can raise $2,500, said adventure will be made available as a pdf. Fair enough. But...

If he can raise $15,000, he'll be sending 9,000 copies of said adventure to stores participating in Free RPG Day. I mean, I went to Free RPG Day last year and got a cool Harn map. But this is a frigging 64 page adventure. For free.

There are also like nine gazillion freebies for various reward levels. Lots of LotFP stuff, lots of stuff from other publishers. When James approached me to see if I'd be willing to help the effort by making one of my own works available as a reward, I was happy to do so. As I've said many times in the past, the OSR is not a zero-sum-game, and when one of us prospers, we all do indirectly.

So hie thyself to Kickstarter and give this bad boy a look-see. There are enough goodies in there to make it worth most folks' while. I personally recommend supporting it at least the $25 reward level. Ahem.

UPDATE: Less than 24 hours in, the project has hit its modest initial goal. Be interesting to see if it reaches the $15k threshold for the print product.

Hasbro Announces 10% Workforce Cut

Posted on 08:46 by rajrani
From the Boston Globe:

Pawtucket, R.I.-based Hasbro, whose brands include Monopoly and Nerf, has about 5,500 employees worldwide. A 10 percent workforce cut would put about 550 people out of work.
While Hasbro said consumer demand was softer than it expected over the holidays, the season was expected to be tough. This was in part because retailers were ordering inventory more cautiously.
...
Spokesman Wayne Charness said that the job cuts will all be this year and will occur globally, with no particular business groups targeted.
He said that the facility consolidations could result in some closures but was not specific about which plants would be affected other than to say no closures were planned in Rhode Island or Massachusetts in 2013. Hasbro has offices in 40 countries worldwide.
So did WotC skip their annual Holiday Massacre layoffs just to have layoffs imposed from above?
